GENERAL DENTIST My name is Dr. Christine Kim and I am a general dentist at For Your Smile Dental. I am a graduate from the University of Alberta and my passion lies in teaching my patients about the best way to take care of their teeth. The most important lesson i share with all my patients is about prevention. The mouth is the door to your body. When your oral health is compromised it can affect your general health, and disease in other body parts can also affect your oral health. That’s why it is very important to come for check-ups every year. Smaller cavities are much simpler to deal with and al much cheaper to pay for compared to when you wait for it to get out of control. So don’t wait for your tooth to blow up on you and come for a check up! I hope to see you sometime and to keep your smule nice and bright!

Their FAQ
Answers from their website.
What is the most common cause of bad breath?
The most common cause of bad breath is the buildup of odour-causing bacteria in the mouth, particularly on the tongue, along the gumline, and between teeth. These bacteria produce volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs), which create the unpleasant smell most people associate with halitosis. Regular professional cleanings and good home hygiene are the most effective ways to address this.
Can bad breath be a sign of gum disease?
Yes, chronic bad breath is one of the most common warning signs of gum disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis. Bacteria that accumulate in infected gum pockets produce toxins and gases that cause persistent halitosis. If you have bad breath that does not improve with brushing, it is important to see a dentist to check for signs of gum disease.
How do I know if my bad breath is coming from my stomach or my mouth?
The majority of bad breath — around 85 to 90 percent of cases — originates in the mouth, not the stomach. Sources include the tongue coating, gum disease, tooth decay, and dry mouth. However, if a dentist has ruled out oral causes, conditions like acid reflux (GERD) or other digestive issues may be contributing, and a referral to a physician may be recommended.
Can a dentist actually fix bad breath?
Yes, a dentist can effectively treat bad breath once the underlying cause has been identified. Treatment may include professional scaling and cleaning, periodontal therapy for gum disease, or restorative work to address cavities and infected teeth. At For Your Smile Dental in Calgary's Crowfoot NW, Dr. Christine Kim will assess your specific situation and recommend the most appropriate course of treatment.
Does dry mouth cause bad breath?
Yes, dry mouth — medically called xerostomia — is a significant contributor to bad breath. Saliva plays a crucial role in rinsing away food particles and bacteria, so when saliva flow is reduced, odour-causing bacteria multiply more rapidly. Dry mouth can be caused by certain medications, mouth breathing, dehydration, or medical conditions, and your dentist can help identify the cause and suggest solutions.
How often should I visit the dentist if I have chronic bad breath?
If you are experiencing chronic halitosis, it is advisable to book a dental assessment as soon as possible rather than waiting for your next routine visit. After the cause is identified and treated, your dentist will recommend a cleaning and check-up schedule appropriate for your needs — which may be every three to four months if gum disease is involved. The team at For Your Smile Dental in Calgary offers flexible scheduling, including walk-in appointments, at 587-330-3000.
Do mouthwashes and mints actually cure bad breath?
Mouthwashes and mints provide only temporary relief by masking odour rather than treating its source. Antibacterial mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine or cetylpyridinium chloride can reduce bacterial counts when used as part of a broader oral hygiene routine, but they are not a standalone cure. Addressing the root cause — whether that is gum disease, tooth decay, or poor oral hygiene — is the only lasting solution, and a dentist can guide you toward the right approach.
