Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Dr. James Yacyshyn obtained his Bachelor of Science degree, with honours, from the University of Alberta. He then obtained his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree, with Distinction, from the University of Alberta. Upon graduation, he went on to pursue and complete a Masters in Applied Science Engineering, from the University of Toronto. With a background in health technology and Informatics, Dr. Yacyshyn joined the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, as an Assistant Clinical Professor. Retired Dr. W. Mel Taskey has been a dental practitioner in the City of Edmonton since the mid-1950’s, and has specialized in fixed and removable prosthodontics since 1968. A past President of the Edmonton and District Dental Society and the Alberta Academy of Prosthodontics, Dr. Taskey has been a pioneer in the science of functional orthodontics and the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction in the Edmonton area. Dr. Miller earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine with Distinction from the University of Saskatchewan in 1997 receiving special recognition in the areas of periodontics, surgery and pediatric dental care and the W.A. Cotter Award for empathy, courtesy and caring for patients. As a general dentist Dr. Miller provides a wide variety of dental care treatments including Invisalign and nitrous oxide sedation. Preventive care and continuing education are her passion. Dr. Miller and her husband play the bagpipes! Retired Dr. Tan received his Master’s degree and specialty training in Prosthodontics from the University of Washington in 1987. He joined the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Alberta in 1989. He is a full-time Associate Professor in the Division of Restorative Dentistry in charge of Removable Prosthodontics. In addition to his teaching and research commitments, he has maintained an active part-time prosthodontic practice since 1990. Dr. Tan’s research interests include testing of dental materials and loading conditions of dental prostheses. His clinical expertise is in the treatment of comprehensive prosthodontic cases using fixed and removable restorations, including implant-supported restorations.
