Their FAQ
Answers from their website.
1. Who is eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
To qualify for the CDCP, you must meet the following criteria: - Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes. - Have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000. - Do not have access to any form of private dental insurance (through your employer, a family member’s employer, or a professional/pension organization). - Have filed your income tax return for the previous year.
2. Does the CDCP cover the full cost of my dental treatment?
The CDCP covers a significant portion of dental costs based on established CDCP fees, but you may still have out-of-pocket expenses. Depending on your adjusted family net income, you may be responsible for a "co-payment": - Below $70,000: 100% of eligible costs covered (0% co-pay). - $70,000 – $79,999: 60% of eligible costs covered (40% co-pay). - $80,000 – $89,999: 40% of eligible costs covered (60% co-pay). Note: If a dentist’s rates are higher than the CDCP’s established fees, you will be responsible for the difference.
3. What dental services are covered under the plan?
The CDCP covers a wide range of oral health services to help maintain healthy teeth and gums, including: - Preventive services: Exams, X-rays, cleanings (scaling), fluoride, and sealants. - Basic services: Fillings, root canals, and extractions. - Major services: Dentures and crowns (some require pre-authorization). - Periodontal services: Deep cleaning and gum treatments.
4. How do I apply for the CDCP?
Applications are managed by Service Canada. Most eligible residents can apply online through the official Government of Canada website. Once your application is approved, Sun Life (the program administrator) will send you a welcome package and a member card.
5. Can I see any dentist I want?
You should visit an oral health provider who has agreed to participate in the CDCP.
6. What is "Pre-authorization" and when is it needed?
Pre-authorization is a process where your dentist submits a treatment plan to the CDCP for approval before the work is done. This is usually required for more complex or costly procedures, such as crowns or initial partial dentures. Your dentist will let you know if a service requires this step to ensure it is covered by the plan.
