Are sedatives safe?
Sedatives are safe if they are administered by a doctor or trained professional. Patients with sleep apnea or difficulty breathing should speak to their dentist or family doctor before taking sedatives.
What is intravenous (IV) sedation?
Some dentists offer IV sedation, a form of sedative administered directly through a vein in your arm. IV sedation causes a deep level of relaxation where you will be unaware of your surroundings.
Can I drive after sedation dentistry?
In most cases, no. Sedatives will slow your reaction times and impair your ability to operate a vehicle. Arrange transportation home from your sedation appointment and stay safe.
What factors put me at risk of developing TMJ disorder?
Risk factors for TMJ disorder include arthritis or jaw injury, chronic jaw clenching or grinding, or connective tissue disease. Excessive gum chewing or chewing fingernails can also contribute to symptoms.
What can I do at home to manage my symptoms?
Anything that relieves stress on the jaws and jaw muscles can reduce the discomfort caused by TMJ disorder. A warm or cold compress placed on the jaw, jaw stretches, or a gentle massage can relax the jaw muscles and reduce stress on the joint. Eating a softer diet and avoiding chewy, hard, or sticky foods can help.
What can I do if my dentures are damaged or slipping?
If your dentures are broken or don’t fit properly, bring them to our office to have them checked and repaired.
How do I clean my dentures?
Keep your dentures clean by removing and rinsing them after every meal. You may also want to rinse your mouth and brush your teeth before putting your dentures back in. Clean your dentures every evening with a soft denture brush and denture cleaning solution, and then soak them overnight in a denture solution. You should regularly bring your dentures to your dentist for inspection and cleaning.
What effect will dentures have on eating and speaking?
Dentures may have an impact on your speech. It can help to practice speaking while you’re wearing dentures. Many patients find it helpful to read aloud to themselves. Dentures can also affect your ability to chew foods or limit the types of foods you can eat. Speak to your dentist for advice if you have trouble eating while wearing dentures.
