What age should kids be first seen by a dentist?
A first visit is recommended at the first birthday or 6 months after the first tooth erupts in the mouth, whichever is earlier. The purpose of this appointment is to discuss the oral care routine for your child, and answer any questions parents might have.
When should I start brushing my kids teeth?
Usually with small kids, toothbrushes are introduced around the age of 1. It's very important that the child doesn't hurt himself/herself while using a toothbrush. If you are unable to use a toothbrush, a clean gauze damped with water can be used to wipe the gums and teeth clean.
What kind of tooth paste should be used for my child?
Until your child learns how to spit, it's important to use fluoride-free toothpaste. Once they can start spitting on their own, you can introduce kids fluoridated toothpaste.
How much toothpaste should I use for my child?
For kids under 5, an amount of toothpaste equal to a grain of rice is sufficient.
When should my child start flossing?
Flossing becomes necessary once the contacts between the teeth become tighter. In children with crowding, this may happen as soon as the teeth are erupted. In children without crowding, the spaces close and contacts start becoming tighter once they start getting their permanent teeth around the age of 6. Contact Dr. Davé for a regular dental exam of your child to get answers to this and all the other questions.
I am anxious about dental treatment. What are my options?
Dr. Davé has lots of experience working with patients who had bad dental experiences in the past and have dental anxiety. Options for such patients depend on how anxious the patients are. Some of the options are treatment and behavioural modifications, open and clear communication, nitrous oxide laughing gas sedation, and oral sedation.
Whats the non-medicinal or non-pharmacological way to help with dental anxiety?
Most patients benefit from just being able to communicate their concerns. Dr. Davé tries to understand what aspects of dentistry are patient anxious about. Some patients feel anxious about needles, some of noise, some are anxious about not being able to swallow or gagging whereas some patients don't feel comfortable laying too far back in the chair. Depending on the issue, Dr. Davé and the team at Norburn Dental Centre work with the patients to accommodate their special requests to have noise-cancelling headphones, certain tv shows, regular breaks, extra numbing jelly, more dental numbing, not leaning the chair too far back etc.
Do I still need freezing even though I opted for sedation?
Yes, Dr. Davé always recommends dental numbing or freezing even if you are being sedated. Oral sedation primarily helps with anxiety. Even though it has very mild pain-relieving effects, it's not sufficient enough to entirely replace dental freezing.
