Their FAQ

Answers from their website.

When should my child first see a dentist or hygienist?

By age 1, or within six months of their first tooth, whichever comes first. The Canadian Dental Association recommends this first visit happen before there is a problem, so cavity risk can be caught early and you get coaching on brushing and diet.

Is my child too young for a cleaning?

No. The whole point of starting by age 1 is gentle prevention and helping your child get comfortable. Early visits are simple: a lift-the-lip look, a soft cleaning, fluoride, a cavity-risk check, and tips for you. The earlier the start, the calmer future visits tend to be.

Can a dental hygienist clean my child’s teeth and apply sealants and fluoride?

Yes. In Alberta, Registered Dental Hygienists independently provide children’s cleanings, dental sealants, fluoride and oral health screening, with no dentist referral needed. We refer you to a dentist only if your child needs a filling or other restorative work.

Are dental sealants worth it, and do they work?

Yes. Sealants are one of the most proven ways to prevent cavities. The CDC reports they prevent up to 80% of cavities in the back teeth for the first two years, and keep protecting against about half for up to four years. Kids without sealants get nearly three times more molar cavities.

How long do dental sealants last?

They can last for years. We check them at every visit and quickly re-apply if one chips or wears. The best time to seal is right after the permanent molars come in, around age 6 and again around age 12.

Are dental sealants safe? What about BPA?

Yes, sealants are endorsed by the CDC, ADA and pediatric dental groups. Any BPA exposure is extremely small and lasts only a few hours after placement, far less than a child gets from everyday food, drinks or handling a receipt. There is no known health concern from BPA in sealants.

Is fluoride safe for kids?

Yes, when used in the right amount. The Canadian Dental Association notes more than 50 years of research show fluoride is safe and effective at preventing cavities. Professional fluoride varnish works right on the tooth surface, and the key at home is using the correct toothpaste amount for your child’s age.

How much fluoride toothpaste should my toddler use?

For children under 3, use only a rice-grain smear, and from ages 3 to 6, a pea-size amount. An adult should brush or closely supervise twice a day so young kids do not swallow toothpaste. Avoid fluoride mouth rinse for children under 6.
