What qualifies as a dental emergency?
Severe pain, swelling, infection, trauma, uncontrolled bleeding and situations that risk permanent damage should be considered dental emergencies. A lost crown or broken tooth may also require urgent care even when pain is limited.
Can I get a same-day emergency appointment?
MI Dental prioritizes urgent dental concerns and offers same-day appointments when availability permits. Call as early as possible and describe your symptoms so the team can assess urgency and reserve appropriate time.
Should I go to the hospital for a toothache?
A dentist is generally better equipped to provide definitive treatment for an uncomplicated toothache. Go to a hospital emergency department or call 911 when breathing or swallowing is affected, facial swelling is spreading rapidly, bleeding is uncontrolled or there is major facial or head trauma.
Is facial swelling dangerous?
It can be. Localized swelling requires urgent dental assessment. Swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, spreads into the neck or eye area, or is accompanied by severe illness requires emergency medical care.
What should I do with a knocked-out permanent tooth?
Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. Replant it immediately when safely possible. If you cannot replace it, keep it moist in milk or saline and obtain immediate dental care. Do not allow the tooth to dry.
Should I put a knocked-out baby tooth back?
No. A primary tooth should not be replanted because doing so may damage the developing permanent tooth. Control bleeding gently and arrange a dental assessment.
What if my filling or crown falls out but I have no pain?
The problem should still be assessed promptly. The tooth may be weakened or exposed to leakage, movement or fracture even when it is not currently painful.
Can I glue my crown back on?
Do not use household glue or superglue. Keep the crown and bring it to the appointment. Temporary dental cement may occasionally be used when the crown seats easily, but it should not be forced into place.
