How long can I expect my dental crown to last if I practice good oral care?
Proper daily care of a dental crown, including regular dental visits and good oral hygiene, should result in a crown that lasts 10-15 years or even longer, depending on the crown's material and the quality of your oral care habits.
Can a tooth that has a crown on it still get a cavity?
Yes. Even though the tooth under the crown is covered, the root and gum line may still develop cavities and decay. Brush and floss around your new crown each day to greatly reduce the chance of developing one.
Is it normal for my new crown to feel strange at first?
Yes. The adjustment period can last for a week or two after getting your new crown. You may experience mild sensitivity and a different bite feel during this time. If it continues for longer than two weeks, contact your dentist.
Can a dental crown be whitened if it becomes stained?
No. A dental crown will not respond to tooth whitening treatments. Porcelain and ceramic crowns are stain-resistant and generally maintain their appearance for many years. If your crown becomes discolored or you are concerned about its appearance, your dentist may recommend replacing it.
How quickly does an infected tooth get worse?
An infected tooth worsens progressively—pain increases within days to weeks, swelling develops, and bone damage begins, which is why prompt treatment is critical.
Can I take antibiotics instead of getting a root canal?
Antibiotics can temporarily reduce symptoms but cannot cure the infection—the infected tissue inside the tooth must be removed with root canal therapy for permanent resolution.
What are the early warning signs that I need a root canal?
Severe tooth pain, sensitivity to hot and cold that persists, darkening of the tooth, swelling in your gum, or a pimple-like bump on your gum are signs you may need a root canal.
Is it safe to delay a root canal for a few weeks?
Delaying even a few weeks allows infection to spread and worsen—the longer you wait, the more damage occurs and the higher the risk of serious complications.
