She studied dentistry at the University of British Columbia and was awarded a DMD in 2018. While at UBC she was awarded the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Student Award, and the Roy Memorial Prize in Dentistry. Is sedation dentistry safe?
There’s always a risk with sedation, but it is generally safe when administered by trained professionals. You may be at risk if you are overweight or if you suffer from sleep apnea. Talk to your dentist if you have any concerns.
What is IV sedation dentistry?
IV sedation is a form of conscious sedation where the sedative is administered intravenously through a vein in your arm. It produces a deep state of relaxation where you will not be fully aware of your surroundings and you won’t remember your treatment.
Why can’t I drive after sedation?
Sedatives can impair your judgement and reaction times so it can be dangerous to operate a vehicle after your appointment. You may also be considered legally impaired and could face charges if you are stopped by law enforcement. It’s safer to arrange a ride home after your appointment.
What are the risk factors for TMJ disorder?
Your risk of developing TMJ can be increased if you have arthritis or a jaw injury, if you chronically clench or grind your teeth, or if you suffer from connective tissue disease that affects the temporomandibular joint. You can also develop TMJ symptoms if your jaw is injured.
Is there anything I can do at home to manage symptoms?
You may find relief from placing a warm or cold compress on your jaw or gently massaging your jaw muscles. Other things that can help are to eat a softer diet and avoid chewy, sticky, or hard foods. You can also relax your jaw muscles. When your jaws are relaxed, your teeth will be slightly apart and your tongue should be resting on the floor of your mouth.
What is oral appliance therapy for snoring?
Oral appliance therapy treats snoring by holding open your airway while you sleep. The appliance resembles an orthodontic appliance, and is designed to fit over your teeth.
Do I need to go to my doctor before seeing a dentist for snoring or apnea treatment?
Yes. Snoring and sleep apnea are medical conditions and you must see your family doctor for diagnosis before seeing a dentist for treatment. Your dentist will work with your doctor to determine the best treatment for you.
Is snoring and sleep apnea dangerous to my health?
Yes. Untreated snoring or sleep apnea can lead to complications such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, worsening depression or ADHD, and diabetes. If you suspect you are snoring or suffering from sleep apnea see your family physician for diagnosis.
