Sedation dentistry is considered safe when administered by trained professionals. We review your medical history and health conditions before recommending any sedation method. Patients are carefully monitored during the entire procedure.

No, you’ll remain conscious just in a deeply relaxed state. Sedation helps you feel calm and less aware of the dental treatment, but you’re still able to respond to questions or instructions. This allows us to work efficiently while keeping the experience as smooth as possible for you. Most patients remember little to nothing of the procedure afterwards. That’s a big relief for those who usually dread dental visits.

We offer three main types: oral sedation, IV sedation and nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Oral sedation comes in pill form and is taken before your appointment. IV sedation goes directly into your bloodstream for a deeper level of relaxation. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask and works quickly to calm you down. Each method is effective and can be tailored to the level of anxiety or treatment you’re receiving.

That depends on the type of sedation used. If you receive nitrous oxide, you’ll feel back to normal quickly and can often drive yourself home. However, with oral or IV sedation, the effects can linger, and you’ll need someone to accompany you and take you home. We’ll provide clear instructions before your appointment so you can plan. Your safety is key both during and after the procedure.

Many people are good candidates, especially those with severe dental anxiety, low pain threshold, strong gag reflex or who need complex or lengthy procedures. We’ll review your medical history and dental needs to see what’s right for you. Even if you’ve had a bad experience before, sedation can help change the way you feel about visiting the dentist. It’s a great way to get dental care without fear or discomfort.

From our perspective, if it hurts or is causing distress, it’s an emergency. Things like a knocked-out tooth, severe pain, a cracked filling, or facial swelling are clear signs you need help now. Even things that seem small—like something stuck between your teeth—can become bigger problems. We’d rather see you sooner rather than later. Time is of the essence. Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket if you can. If not, store it in milk or between your cheek and gums, then call us right away. Getting to the dentist within 30–60 minutes gives the best chance of saving it. Don’t wait—your next call should be to our emergency dentist.

Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers may help take the edge off. Rinse with warm salt water if there’s swelling or irritation. But remember, home remedies only provide temporary relief. You’ll still need to see us for emergency dental care.
