Before you book

A few questions make the first visit easier for everyone.

What to say when you call

“Hi, I’m looking for a dentist for my child. Do you see children their age? When’s your first opening after school or on a Saturday? Do you bill my insurance or the dental care plan directly?”

Have your child’s health card and your insurance or dental care plan details handy.

Worth asking

From what age do you see children?
Can brothers and sisters be booked together?
Can I stay with my child during the visit?
Do you have appointments after school or on Saturdays?
If my child gets very nervous, what do you do? Do you offer sedation, and where?
Do you bill my insurance or the dental care plan directly for my child?

Help with the cost

Two programmes can pay for your child’s dental care. Check if your family qualifies.

Common questions

When should my child first see a dentist?

The Canadian Dental Association recommends a first visit within six months of the first tooth coming in, or by age one, before there’s a problem. Source

Pediatric dentist or family dentist?

Either can look after your child’s teeth. A pediatric dentist trained as a specialist in children’s dentistry after dental school. A family dentist means the whole family can go to one place. If your child is very anxious or needs more complex treatment, ask your dentist whether a specialist would help.

Do I need a referral for a pediatric dentist?

Some children’s specialists and hospital clinics ask for a referral from your dentist or doctor, and some don’t. Ask when you call.

How often should my child go?

Usually every six months, so small problems are caught early. Your dentist may suggest a different schedule for your child. Source
